Site Upgrade - May 2026

The site is migrated to an upgraded forum, with a more modern interface, better security and better spam protection.

The upgrade includes a dedicated Classifieds section as a free service to registered users. Classified ads are publicly visible and searchable, exposing the advertisments to search engines and the internet at large.

All users, posts, etc. are migrated.

Passwords were not migrated. A previously registered user wishing to access the upgraded forum MUST reset their password first.

Guest Landing Page

One side effect of the previous changes was denying access to the site index page, which has the 'How to Join' for non-members.

The site index now looks like this, prospective users can access the instructions to join.

There are no links for bots and spiders to follow without a login.

Latest Service Interruption - 27th October

There were processes running that consumed all the resources of the server host. In the past, when I referred to the hosting support, they would resolve it within 24 hours.

After 3 days, nothing was happening, so I poked at the problem myself. The host provides console access, which I used, found the offending processes and terminated them. All came from this forum.

The way the forum software is written permits access to web crawlers with no login, so there is no configuration option to stop that.

Before going nuclear, and migrating the forum to a new platform, which would probably have the same 'feature', I looked through the forum code, and I believe I found the offending lines that bypassed security for these anonymous resource killers. Said lines are now removed.

At the bottom of the index page, it shows who's online, and you then see what the 'guests' are busy with. All 'guests' are now diverted to the Login page, you can see this by the red circle next to the current activity for each 'guest'.

This should prevent bots and crawlers from kicking off long-running, resource intensive processes to harvest data.

Site Changes for October

I've been trying to get rid of the bots accessing the site, and found it's not possible. The software is hard-coded to accept bot access. The best I can do is limit what the bots can access, and that means restrictions on the Guest account. I've removed all access to all boards for Guest, nobody can access any content without first logging in, but the bot access has not stopped. According to the logs, they are all reading the Calendar, which is also disabled.

The Forum is upgraded to the latest version. There was a 30 minute window of panic when I thought I had broken the site and the site backup doing the upgrade. Frantic keyboard activity succeeded, and here we are.

I've disabled guest access to the forum.

The resource unavailable message is from excessive bot activity, and the methods of detecting bot activity are unreliable, the only other option is to restrict access to forum content to logged in users only.

This should not negatively impact any registered forum users.

Server Maintenance

This important upgrade will take place on July 18th at 10 PM local server time. During the upgrade, you will experience website downtime lasting up to 4 hours. "

The server is in GMT-9 timezone, so this downtime will affect us the morning of the 19th, around 07:00AM for up to 4 hours.

Forum User registration change

The signup process was initially relaxed to accept immediate member registrations.

We are finding user accounts posting spam, including malicious browser links.

The signup process now requires email validation before the forum account is activated.

.. and Shooting Sports

If you represent a shooting sport, you may have your own message board here, and will be given access to the forum calendar to post events.

A check will de done to verify that you actually represent the shooting sport before the message board is created, or access given to the calendar.

There is no intention to introduce any pay for use system for any user, wether a regular user or a dealer.

There is the intention to provide an advertising service on this forum, available to any registered user, the costs to be determined at that time.
