I just debugged another one of those 'gunsmith oversight' issues.

I'd bought a donor action, sent it to have a rifle built around it.

Fired two shots. Only two shots because of a different 'gunsmith oversight' - very bad fitting rail, I've already complained about that in another thread.

Came home with it, opened the bolt, and noticed the handle was moving but the bolt body was not. Phoned gunsmith, he explained that the handle is screwed on the bolt, and the loctite may have come loose, I should take it back and he would apply more loctite.

I said no problem, loctite I have, and know how to use, so I applied the loctite, screwed the bolt handle down to where it needs to be so the bolt can enter the action at the correct angle, and I assumed problem solved.

Took the rifle to the range to set zero, after correcting gunsmith oversight .

No ignition. Firing pin drops, not hitting the primer. Stripped the bolt at the range, couldn't see what the problem was, packed it up.

After stripping the bolt, and seeing how the firing pin protrusion is actually adjustable on this, I measured protrusion and it was in spec, .045" . Then I was thinking along the lines of new spring.

After a while of prodding and poking, I noticed that the bolt handle stop was not against the action, about 10 degrees short of full close. What this does is prevent the firing pin from dropping fully, the cocking sleeve impacts on the bolt sleeve in the wrong place, so the pin was not hitting the primer at all.

The bolt was so tight at that point it felt like a hard stop.

Applying marking blue showed the bolt body was binding in the action.

The reason the handle came loose in the first place was probably due to me closing a bit past the point causing it to bind, and the force of opening it loosened the handle on the threads.

The reason it fired the first two shots was likely the bolt handle angle was a few degrees advanced out of place, giving the pin just enough protrusion to ignite the primer.

I used valve grinding compound on the bolt body around the section where it was binding, and got it to the point where the bolt handle is now closing on the bolt body.

Primer protrusion is measured and in spec, the cocking sleeve engaging the bolt sleeve correctly.

Now it just needs a good clean to make sure all the valve compound is gone.

This weekend some one brought in a bag of bits including a bolt-locked barrelled action and wooden pieces.
IMG_20250204_083935.jpg
The gentleman in question just returned from taking the first shot with a rifle he wanted to buy using the owner's supplied ammunition. The ammunition was PMP factory rounds for the rifle purchased approximately 25 years ago.

He only had a small scratch on his upper arm and his friend had a black mark on the palm of his hand. The RUD happened on the first shot.

We forced the bolt open using the butstock as a wooden mallet. As expected this broke the extractor. Then the flettened primer, part of the bolt and part of the firing pin fell out as well. A light tap with a cleaning rod down the tube and the case came out as well.
IMG_20250203_184347.jpg
Unsurprisingly the barrel and action was clear and did not seem to have any damage, dings or bulges. The bolt was not so lucky. The extractor was broken, part of the lip around the bolt head was sheared off, the ejector slot was jammed with extruded brass. Bolt lugs looked OK, but needs a proper inspection from a gunsmith.
IMG_20250203_184203.jpg
At first we thought thereust have been a barrel obstruction, but the barrel was clear with no bulges. Then maybe the bullets were reloaded with pistol powder or maybe fast powder like S335 using S365 charge weight. Then we noticed that the neck and half the shoulder of the case is missing. IMG_20250203_184233.jpg

It was a 7mm Remington Magnum older than 20 years. And the ammo was older than 20 years as well.

My working theory now is that somehow the bullet was welded to the neck and the overpressure is from the neck and shoulder being dragged into the barrel.

It's a lovely old school Mauser '98ish rifle and even with my limited skills I shoot it well enough for government work. I use a combination of jacketed full fat and reduced velocity cast/powder coated loads.

It's coming up on 600 rounds through it and that got me to thinking how long its barrel may have left. I've looked at a number of online sources that suggest 1400ish rounds for accuracy and as much as double that for usefulness.

Given that at least half of the rounds I shoot are sub 2000 fps cast bullet based I'd imagine that it could last a fair bit longer so I'm not after guesses on that element so much as any real world experience on lifespan with jacketed ITO of mileage with original-ish accuracy retained and the end of usefulness for hunting use.
