Spill vs Throw? Lumens vs Candela?

In a defensive flashlight you need both.
Spill will give you critical situational awareness. A laser beam of light will not provide this. Here is where lumens is your friend. You need to see what's around your target; the target could have brought a few friends of his own. You need enough Lumens to allow for good useable spill.
Throw will not only help you reach out further but will also help you defeat photonic barriers...the barriers created by lights. In an urban environment you will find heaps of these, shadows created by street lights, car lights...even a target standing behind a light. You need enough Candela to punch through these barriers.

A great defensive flashlight will have a good balance of lumens and candela.

Interesting, I have learnt more from this short post than I thought there was to know about torch's. Never thought of any of the factors you mentioned, only considered "brightness" as a factor that mattered.
Thank you for post, very informative - never thought there was more to it than "brightness".
I am who I am - I am not who you want me to be.
Therefore I am me.
