Title: Rifle Barrels - in SA and generally
Post by: Newton on Apr 28, 2024, 09:59 AM
I was scratching around on JARACAL - saw posts about locally made barrels

Does anyone here have any experience with any of these local manufacturers ?
Anyone active in this field know the current state of the - barrel making industry in SA ?

Sadly barrels - a consumable - are terribly expensive ( I guess to cover the investment in equipment ? )

Sneeuberg Barrels ( never heard of them before ) apparently produce shootable barrels
but
From what I read have the standard South African problem with communication - never answer emails ?

Anyone know where they are located ? ... somewhere in the Karoo

Does Truvelo still produce barrels ?

What barrels do you guys use when it comes time for barrel change ?
Sell your old HOWA and buy a new one ? ....ROFL

Many thanks
Already been there

Sneeuberg website VERY basic - I was not able to find an actual address
or
any other interesting information - like what process they use - with what equipment ?
From photo I see what looks like a fancy CNC machine
However they use a button rifling method -do not think you do that n a CNC ?

Thanks

Rifling 101 ...

Popular Rifling types (https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/popular-rifling-types-advantages-disadvantages/)

I find this as fascinating as cartridge chamber design - there is "magic" involved

Yes it appears there are CNC button rifling machines

UNISIG  R-Series Rifling machines (https://unisig.com/all-machines/r-series-rifling-machines/)

ALL you need - is some money ..
although
Perhaps IF you are very knowledgeable and skilled and know how to program you may be able to do this on a "regular" CNC ?
