Advice given recently, in this forum, has aroused my idea of buying another P14 303, with a nice stock, and replacing the military style stock I have on mine.

The potential problem I have generated for myself is this.  Are all the dimension of all P14 actions identical, so that I can remove a stock from, for example, an ERA manufactured action and place in it on the action of any of the other manufacturers without having to reshape the stock?  I appreciate that barrel profiles may differ.

I have zero personal experience of P14s but the fact that it was built to military order against a 'pattern' specification would suggest that any stock of the same pattern would be interchangeable. I'd also expect that the action profile would be the kind of thing least likely to change between patterns.

I have only known the stocks and actions to be identical. Were they not all made at Springfield armoury ?

I know of an Black poliwhatsaname P14 stock for R4000 at the moment - saw it at a gunsmith, it is an candidate for sanding down and hydro dipping or spraying.

I believe that the P14's were manufactured by Winchester, Remington and Eddystone (ERA).  Patience is the name of the game.  It's wait until the beaut stock comes up on a rifle at low cost.  I let one for under R4000.00 slip through my fingers - procrastination.  The nephew I was going to give the rifle to (after the swop) had not yet done his competency and when I got back to it, "SOLD" was the answer

Why not? If it has no sentimental or collector's value, why not chop and change it into something usefull?

Because I'm an arrogant grumpy rooinek who thinks that hydrodip on a 100 year old wooden rifle stock is like a tight dress, high heels and stage makeup on a sous tannie. Taste is a subjective thing though so luckily people can do as they wish with their property.

My irrational urge is to make a very short, like less than 16 inches short, 'tanker' out of a P14 but in a way that looks like it may have been factory.

Even more verkrampte rooiek mates that me are incensed at the idea so I will have to do it at some point.

As per my it appears unread or confusing post, its a "poliwhatsaname" stock, that black plastic type.

Go ahead, and please share some pictures? My one dream still is to build a bullpup 303 for a bakkie rifle. Full barrel length, but 85cm OAL as well, maybe 95cm. The sketch is done and I have started on a pine version of the stock, but I dont get to work on it much.

It would be something along the lines of the attached but perhaps not quite so short. The idea would be to use it with low velocity cast bullets primarily.

That's a very interesting idea and as a history geek one that really appeals. The brits were big on bullpups from way back. The Thorneycroft being an early 303 chambered example.
